CLOSING OR
NOT CLOSING?
The latest news says that the LB gym will remain open for a maximum of 3 more years, thanks to a last-minute funding agreement signed with UNB and the City of Fredericton. This doesn’t change the fact that the future of climbing in Fredericton is uncertain.

The wall housed at the LB gym was constructed in the late '90s and, while it serves basic needs, operates entirely on a volunteer basis and has limited opening hours. The facility has not undergone a serious upgrade since 2010 and UNB will not allow installation of air handling equipment, additional lighting or construction/modernization of any climbing features. The facility has been a wonderful boon for climbers in Fredericton, but all realize that it is outdated and there is a strong desire among its users to see something better take its place.
Beyond the 3-year extension, UNB has not indicated any desire to find a new facility for the UNB Rock and Ice Club, or allow the construction of a new wall anywhere on campus. It’s pretty clear to us that UNB does not have our climbing community’s interest at heart, and we don’t want to wait around to find out what will happen when the gym is torn down.
